Summer Startup

/ / Leifeld's Blog

Spring is my favorite. Winter puts me in a funk in mid-January and that makes me unpleasant to be around. Then, when the snow finally goes away and everything starts to turn green, the attitude adjustment is palpable. Knowing that baseball is back gets me thinking about getting the yard in baseball field shape. Summer startup; here I come!

The house that I bought in Colorado is landscaped exquisitely by the previous owner and that makes us look like amazing homeowners. Except, keeping it up to par and getting it restarted each year is a huge challenge! For example, the irrigation system is confusing with split zones all over the yard. It is over 12 years old, so the heads needs fixed constantly. Further, the flower beds all need extensive TLC. And, the lawn needs the perfect fertilizer balanced with heavy weed control. I learned a ton working for the village, but it’s a little different when you don’t have the amazing Petersburg soil to fall back on.

What’s more, the stain on our upper deck, the front porch, the dining pavilion, and hundreds of feet of fence all needs redone. Luckily, my father-in-law’s friend gave me a second-hand spray gun. I have a lot of painting to do. My entire street is brand new houses. Of course, my house is a 2009. I’m not a big fan of keeping up with the Joneses, but the neighbors point out that this is great painting weather. Thanks for the hint Jodi. Thank God my parents have a hardware store!

I only get home a few times each year nowadays, but when I do, the list of “I need this” is longer than father’s sermon! I hope you’ll consider keeping you dollars in Petersburg as you get your summer startup going. A few families spending a thousand dollars is just another 20 minutes at Menards or Home Depot. A few families spending a couple hundred bucks makes a huge difference for your neighbors.

If we don’t have it, you don’t need it.

How old is the blade on your mower? Leifeld’s has every length you can imagine.

New hoses make me happier than they should – I’ll admit it. When it tastes nasty, it’s time to replace it.

Rose bushes scratch the crap out of your shins and arms. A good set of pruning sheers and gardening gloves are game changers.

You spend time in your yard, have some fun with it. Whirligigs, bird stuff, Huskers lawn art – we’ve got some great stuff! It’s reasonable and awesome.
